The Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc. is a private non-profit organization that opened its doors in 1979 as one of the first three domestic violence shelters in the State of Ohio. The Shelter was started by a group of citizens who determined that a domestic violence shelter was needed. The program began in a structure above a car dealer downtown with two rented rooms. We had a volunteer staff. A few years later, a very generous community member donated a three-story house. After several renovations, the house became a four-bedroom shelter with administrative offices on the third floor. In 1998 The Shelter, with a grant from a local foundation, purchased its current facility, which can house up to ten families. Clients moved into the new facility in January 2000. ![]() Since 1979 The Shelter has changed in many ways. The Shelter is no longer just a building to keep women and their children safe, but also offers assistance with support groups, legal advocacy, a family development program, and a volunteer and community education program to provide our victims a comprehensive plan to assist them in breaking away from abusive situations. We serve a three county area including Ashland, Huron and Richland counties. We have a professional staff and continue to grow daily in our services and our ability to assist victims of domestic violence. We have expanded our services to include not only victims of domestic violence, but also victims of other intimate crimes such as stalking and sexual assault. We have changed, but one thing does remain the same, The Shelter's strong commitment to ending the cycle of violence. The mission of The Domestic Violence Shelter is to provide an alternative to living in a violent situation and to offer education/resources necessary for victims to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. The vision of The Shelter: To provide the best and most complete services for victims of domestic violence.
